Today Barnsley Schools welcomed Hull Schools U11’s for Hull’s first game.

After kick off, Hull Schools started on the front foot and attacked well on a difficult bobbly pitch. Following, a period of Hull dominance, Barnsley won a debatable penalty, at the edge of the largest 9 aside penalty box anyone has ever seen! The Barnsley forward tucked the penalty away in the corner with James Barrett coming close to keeping it out. Barnsley Schools 1-0 Hull Schools. After the penalty Barnsley scored 2 quick-fire goals to make it 3-0 Barnsley after the first 20 minutes.

After a short break Hull started to dominate for a period with some good football. A scramble in the box and Dan Stansfield hit the post, rebounded and Barnsley failed to clear and Hull pulled one back with an own goal. 3-1! Hull’s heads were up and Charlie Smith pulled another goal back after we hit the post again! 3-2! Hull kept on pushing and had a poor offside call where we were clearly onside with a one on one with just the keeper to beat. Unfortunately, Barnsley broke and were clinical in their finishing to restore their advantage.

Barnsley were again on top and scored two kick fire goals with some good football down the wings, that Hull failed to clear. A late come back looked unlikely but out of nothing, after some good play in the centre of the pitch by Harry Martinson, Finlay Gladstone on the wing was through and finished with a great strike in the top corner.

Shortly after, Finlay then drove into the box and was obviously taken out. It was a clear penalty! Yet the referee did not point to the spot and play continued. Hull kept the pressure on but they didn’t bear the fruits of their labours. The final whistle was blown and it ended in a 6-3 loss. There was no need to be disheartened though, as Hull played some good football in their first match together.

We would like to thank Barnsley for hosting and refreshments after the game. It was a entertaining game, we will learn from it and we’re looking forward to the challenge of Doncaster Schools next week.

MOTM – Freddie Fletcher great all round battling performance.
